"A relationship is the best safety net"

Nine years together with Marcelo and a light thirties crisis have made Tarja Turunen think about starting a family.
- There probably never is a good time if you wait for it forever.

Singer Tarja Turunen's home in Kuusankoski has been covered with so much snow that it's been hard to get out. The snow has been shoveled constantly and at times the electricity has been out. Now there's at least light but the floor heater is still acting up.
The 31 year old soprano doesn't still mind the snowbanks. Snow softens voices nicely and Tarja has slept better in the quitness of a small town than in a long time. Also Argentinean manager husband Marcelo Cabuli, 39, is excited about the snow.
- Marcelo relaxes in Finland. Even working is calmer here than in other places. The phones don't ring nonstop.
Marcelo also knows how to equip for the cold. When coming in the man is wearing a wind resistant coat, jeans, proper hiking shoes and a hat with a bobble on top. The appearance is quite Finnish especially when a collage jacket and a waist bag are revealed under the coat.
There's nothing aggressive macho about his behaviour more reserved backwarding. It's easy to believe that on the couple's first trip to the sauna he was wearing shorts.
- Marcelo isn't a typical South-American latino man. Argentineans in general aren't like the cheerful Brazilians but more melancholic like us Finns. There I can be exactly as I am. Perhaps that's why there haven't been any cultural shocks.

A dust rag in hand

Tarja and Marcelo have been together for almost nine years and for five years they've had a second home in Kuusankoski. During the spring the couple moved from a row house to a detached house in need of renovation.
- We redid everything from the floor to the roof. Everytime you got home you needed to pick up a paint brush. We're both spontaneous people: if one had the idea to paint the walls red we did. Now the only place that is unfinished is my work area that should be done at the end of the year.
Tarja laughs that they are always doing something. Or at least Tarja is, Marcelo reputedly sits in front of the computer 24 hours a day.
- But I don't mind, I like to do all the housework. We're both allergic to dust so I pick up a dust rag or put the laundry in the machine as soon as we walk though the door. I enjoy cleaning and you get the dust off better when you do it yourself, Tarja thinks.
She also needs to run everyday either outside or at least on the treadmill. Then the headphones are playing metal or pop and the rest of the world fades far away. There's usually time to watch movies only after midnight.
- Me and Marcelo are quite nocturnal people. Without an alarm clock we'd sleep late in the afternoon. We like to go to the sauna and have friends over during the evenings. We don't go to bars often though and in our home in Buenos Aires there's enough beat of the city without that.
The couple has lived in Buenos Aires for six years. The trip to the Argentinean home is so long that they don't just drop by but stay for weeks at a time.
- That works for me. I like it in Argentina, especially now when I've learned Spanish. People there are more open and the athmosphere is more relaxed than in Finland. I've travelled a lot and become more adaptable but Argentinean culture was still easier to slip into.

Relationship isn't taken for granted

Many of Tarja's friends have wondered how the couple stands eachother so well. Since Marcelo is Tarja's manager they also work together.
- For us combining love and work was the best option. If we didn't travel together, we'd never see eachother. Luckily Marcelo can handle his other work on the road only rarely he has to fly somewhere else for negotiations. And if I miss being alone I can retreat to a book or jogging.
The last time Tarja and Marcelo were apart was a few weeks ago when Tarja travelled to Kuopio for voice therapy. Even a day apart felt hard for the couple.
- Marcelo send three text masseges in that time. We're so used to being together always. We don't take the relationship for granted but somehow it's become this safety net under everything. I can't even remember when we were apart before that.
Sometimes the couple clashes and the conversation can get tense, but the explosion is over in seconds.
- Usually it's about something that hasn't been done. But I can't mope and luckily also Marcelo wants to clear things right away. And when Marcelo decides something there's no point arguing about it. It'll stick.
Tarja and Marcelo met at the change of the millennium when Tarja was still the singer in Nightwish. The band was touring in South-America, Marcelo was in charge of the arrangements and toured with the band. Slowly Tarja noticed that the work companionship had turned into love.
Returning to Finland she felt horrible. Was it real emotions after all and if so was there any sense in starting a long-distance relationship?
- All my previous dreams fell apart. I had imagined setting up a family in Finland but suddenly I was in love with a man on the other side of the world. Luckily Marcelo followed me to Helsinki though I had told him not to and we were convinced of our love.
Tarja was especially taken with Marcelo's ability to be present. After traveling for months with a bunch of men Tarja needed an outside listener and Marcelo seemed to always have time.
- Marcelo didn't suck up to me or try to be better than he was. He was always his true self. Slowly I noticed that Marcelo also had an incridible sense of humour and I realized that our chemisteries match otherwise as well. We're soulmates.
During the first few years the couple spent months apart because of Tarja's touring. Sometimes Tarja had to check from photos what Marcelo's eyes were like.
Despite the fumbles in the beginning neither had the feeling they couldn't trust eachother. They weren't suspicious what the other was doing while the other one was away.
- That would have made being apart even harder. One day we decided that this can't go on. We got married and Marcelo started to tour with the band. After that we've been inseparable. My dramatic split from the band just made us closer.

Christmas at Kitee

A few years ago Tarja was doing a gig in Germany when her stomach started to cramp. She was rushed to the hospital where the cramps were suspected to be from an intestines yeast syndrome.
Now Tarja is on a sugar and flour free diet and is feeling much better.
- I've never really had a sweet tooth but I've reacted to changes with my stomach. Now after a long time I feel great. This year has been wonderful and workfilled but I haven't had even a flu. My skin has also been better and I feel energetic.
That is easy to believe as Tarja glows now when she steps in front of the camera. The tours in Europe and South-America that started during the spring aren't weighing down the small and fragile woman who has a catchy laugh.
Only a composing session for the new album in Sweden and one gig in Germany are ahead this year. Tarja will spend Christmas with her family in her big brother Timo's new home in Kitee. On Boxing Day the couple will head from Tarja's birthplace to Marcelo's home town in Buenos Aires to greet the new year.
- Christmas has always been our family's most important celebration. Our mother's passing a few years ago made a huge hole in our family community and on Christmas the longing emphasizes. Still it's wonderful to see my brothers and father who live on different sides of Finland.
After mother's death Tarja has tried to learn to enjoy every moment. Since you never know what day will be your last.
- I regretted for a long time that I didn't spent more time with my family when mum was sick. Afterwards I've realized that regret is useless. The most important thing is that I'll try to be as good a daughter, sister, wife and friend as I can.

Talking about children

Marcelo has enjoyed Finnish Christmas eventhough the only son of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother is sometimes amused by the Finns attitude towards Santa Claus.
- In Argentina Santas run around in shorts and there's nothing magical about them. In Finland Marcelo has been impressed seeing how Finnish kids believe in Santa Claus. That's a tradition he'd like to keep with his own children.
Yes, the children. Marcelo has hoped for offspring for many years but Tarja has been pushing the brake. Now when she has hit the thirty year mark the resistance is starting to crack and they have discussed the matter seriously.
- I don't know if it's baby fever or what but I've started to pay more attention to the small ones running around me. It feels like every other friend of mine has a belly growing. There probably will never be a perfect time for kids if a start to wait for it. I do want to sing for a long time but I think a family will accompany with that. At least until it's time for the child to settle down for school.
No other signs of the thirties crisis is in sight.
- In my body I notice that things are starting to loosen, I'm not a girl anymore. Luckily Marcelo gives positive feedback daily: he thinks I'm more beautiful now than ever. It would be awful to hear that your bottom looks big, you'd better go to the gym more often.

* Calls her husband 'Markku'. "At first I though Marcelo wanted to be an okey guy when he agreed on everything. Later I realized that we're so alike."
* A car fan who relaxes by travelling, diving and tuning her own summer car, a Fiat 600. "My dream is to get a big garage full of old cars. The louder the sound the better the car."

When the dust has settled

Rytmi tried to write an article about Tarja Turunen, who's soon releasing a solo album, without mentioning Nightwish, but failed in the tenth word of the introduction. The reason why, is in at the end of the story.

Tarja Turunen's life is smiling again. It's a busy suitcase rumble of a musician: Recordings, promotings, appalauses around the world. And when the schedule allows, regular day of the married couple in Buenos Aires. They're trying to go to their other home in Kuusankoski as often as possible, because Tarja's spiritual home is still in Finland.
"In a couple of last years, I've been able to go there regrettably rarely. Me and my husband are missing Finland a lot, when we're on the road. Every time I come home, I throw my suitcases on the hall floor, and grab a rag, and put our home in good condition." Smiling Tarja tells in the lobby bar of a hotel in Helsinki.
Turunen is originally from Kitee, where her brothers still live. She goes there too every now and then.
"I've been there rarely in a last couple of years. It's easier for my family to come to Kuusankoski, because we would have to pack our stuff and go to the Eastern Finland."
Kitee is so small place, that she can see one or two familiar faces when walking around there. Which brings up a question, what would Tarja say to her ex bandmate Tuomas Holopainen, if she'd bump into him?
"Hello", Tarja answers and gives a dry laugh.
"Of course I would say hello. No question about it."
Turunen must've been gotten used to aswer a lot of questions concerning Holopainen and Nightwish. These questions interes many people and after all she has become known because of Nightwish. Turunen herself finds the subject anything but pleasing.
Also Turunen's record company feels disappointed that the interwiew included Nightwish-related questions. It seems strange, since they both are recording for the same company, Tarja for Universal, and Nightwish for Spinefarm, which belongs to them [Universal].
Many reporters have been able to make an interwiew without asking about these things. Promotors were asking, that Rythm would also concentrate on Turunen's new album, instead of the [ex]band.
The record company should be very aware of the fact that that's not how the real music journalism works.

Tarja Turunen's husband stays by her side through thick and thin - almost literally. He sits reading rock magazine couple of tables away from me and Tarja.
Thay must feel relieved now. when Tarja's album My Winter Storm, which comes out in November, is almost finished. It's the first album where Turunen is able to make her all wishes come true and bring out her real musical self.
The album is an international piece of work at least from the starting point: It has been recorded in Spain, Swizerland, Germany, United States and in Finland.
"Many international names have been working on the album. We wanted to think them, and record songs in locations that are familiar for them. I have never work in any studio outside Finland. It was nice to get to see how music is done elsewhere."
Album's been produced by Daniel Presley, who's been working before with Faith No More for example. The musicians playing on the album have qualifications from Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Pet Shop Boys and Air.
The record company fact sheet doesn't mention the song writers, and surprisingly even Tarja can't remember all their names.
"You can ask their last names from the record company. I'm so much of a busy, that I might say wrong names. Music has been done by three teams, from Sweden, Germany and Ibiza. And myself. The album has 14 songs, I've been doing composing and writing in eight of them. One song I have done complitely myself."
"I was sent hundreds of songs and I listened every single one of them. I told the record company that I don't wanna who's behind which song. It would be different to listen to the songs, if I knew that my best friend wrote one of the songs."

Conflicts

The theme of the album started to open up for Tarja in Ibiza, where she spent a week with musician couple Torsten Stenzel and Angela Heldmann. Spanish Ibiza has a reputation of restless ecstacy paradise. Tarja had her own biases towards the island.
"But we found the other side of the island. It was inspiring enviroment and athmosphere. During the week, six new songs were done, and based on them I draw a story in my mind. That story in my mind I was leading the composers and lyric writers."
What kind of a story?
"Very personal." Tarja says mysteriously.
The story involves the working title My Winter Storm, which became the final title for the album.
"I saw it as a storm around those people who have affected my career. I mean especially the fans and people who had positive impact for my life."
Does the name have any negative meanings?
"I see it as a positive, but storma can also be scary. Sometimes I have questioned, that do people really feel that strong towards me?" Tarja says, and tells an example:
"One girl asked me to sign her arm, and told me that next thing she's gonna do, is make a taatoo of it. I asked "are you really sure"? I asked her couple of times: "Do you know it will be forever there"?
"I'd like to say about the album sound, that it's the kind of sound that it's the first step for the sound I wanna get to the next album. Now I have all the channels and all the people who I can work with."
Can this be interpreted that Tarja is not complitely satisfied with the sound of My Winter Storm?
"I'm complitely satisfied for this album, and I'm also proud of it. I have kept my wiews with it, and I've seen what I wanted to see. It was new thing for everyone involved in the process. We created something new, that wasn't availlable in a package like this before."
What new?
"I think it's sort of a combination thing, a conflict of different music styles. In a same time it has certain kind of emotional charge through the whole album, which is really hard to find these days. It creates lot of images and stories for people. Everyone can create their own visions of them."
Tarja says that movie music sound made a big impression for her, and sound of certain soundtracks is an important part of My Winter Storm. Especially Tarja admires Hans Zimmer, who's studio was used for making some part of the album.
Based on the five song promo album, sounds like the conflict Tarja mentioned, is a combination of opera singing and metal banging [or smth like that] Razz
And in this poin Tarja's Nightwish backround must be brought up:
Turunen has brought them on the album herself, meaning Nightwish-impulses.
Operametal feels strange choise, because all her Nightwish career Turunen has been saying in interwiews that she's not a rock girl, but classical singer, who's heart is beating with totally different music.
"It's crystal clear that Nightwish has affected me. I was nine years in the band a I grew for a woman in it. The band and the music became a huge part of my life. Via Nightwish I got to know metal music."
Tarja is still smiling, but the subject takes the glimpse from her eyes and brings minor tightness to her voice.
When I started to sing in Nightwish, my life was fully classical. I was starting my Sibelius Academy studies. During Nightwish career I realized that I wanted to continue developing as a classical singer. I've always wanted to develope. If I would notice that I sang some aria better two years ago that now, it would be catastrophe."
"Classical music is my life, but it's not everything. I still can't call myself classical singer, because that's not the real me, I can't say I'm a pro singer. I'm far away from the skills of real opera singer. I gotta work many years for that."
Apparently we can see Turunen getting up on stage as a good old heavy-Tarja. And nothing wrong with that, that's exactly the reason thousands of fans love her.

The ghost of Nightwish

Nightwish is also relevant subject, because they have just released their album, that has three songs about things related to Turunen's discharge.
The Poet And The Pendulum tells the feelings of the songwriter Tuomas Holopainen in the middle of the crisis. Master Passion Greed is attacing aginst "the main demon" Marcelo Cabuli, and Bye, Bye Beautiful expressesHolopainen's disappointment to Tarja.
Turunen hasn't heard those songs at the time of the interwiew, and understandably she doesn't even want to. In her own album she doesn't condescend lower her ex employer.
"There are no song about that. The album is a story of my life and experiences. It's my lifeline from since I was 15 to this moment, but it tells more about dreams, and fighting for those dreams."
But what does she thing the Tarja-neutral songs[of the NW album]?
I've heard the songs Eva and Amaranth, but I'm the wrong person to ask public opinion. I understan that it would be interesting, but I don't see this as a thing I should comment.
Of course it is...Exiting! Exiting and strange. It does sound strange, when I've been singing in the same band for such a long time."
So how would Tarja characterize the new singer Anette Olzon's voice?
"Now you're asking from a wrong person. I wish her all the best and good luck for her new career, but I can't answer to this one."
Holopainen's open letter to Tarja, marked her as fallen angel, who's been changed by the succes from nice country girl to a diva who's dispicing her fans. Cabulis open letter against it had quite believable points as well.
If you think about this after the dust has settled, does Tuomas' accusations have anything truthfull?
"Once again I wouldn't go back to the things that happened two years ago. I have turned such a big page in my ife, that I don't see that we should continue talking about this."
Turunen had to get up on stage pretty soon after the racket, because the Christmas tour was already booked. She admits that she was being nervous.
"I did have a feeling like wow, no I must be able to face the people, look them in the eye and be the same Tarja as they remember me. Even though we're talking about complitely doifferent music here, silent Christmas songs. But it was very touching. I was able to connect with people right away, and they came to talk to me when I met them."
"The moments of insecurity were gone after the first concert. I knew I have my place as a singer. I decided to do evrything I can for that."
What is it like to get up on the stage now?
"Wonderful. Incredible! I'm waiting for the tour so much. Setlists has been done, and the first rehearsals start soon. Let's see where my music takes me", Tarja says.
The smile is real again.

"Mother's death brought us closer" *

Mother's getting sick with a breast cancer and death in 2003 brought singer Tarja Turunen and her brother Tony Turunen, 26, who's going to be in the Eurovision tryouts, closer to each others.
-Tarja gives me advices how to use my voice, and supports me in every way. I can feel her support all the way from Buenos Aires, says Tony Turunen, who's trying to get to the Eurovision finals as a singer in a band called Passionworks.
He toured last spring with his Tarja-sister around the Europe in about 20 different countries.
Hardes time of his youth Tony Turunen appoints their parents divore in the millenium, and their mother's death three years later.
-My mother was only 54 years old when she died. Everything was tried when she was treated, but nothing helped. They even removed her other breast. Fortunately his relationship with father remained good after the divorce. My nature is optimistic and bright despite the sad things in life.

After the difficult time in life, Tony Turunen who's from Kitee, found a girlfriend called Jenni who's from central Finland, by his side, and the couple have been living in Helsinki almost two years. After the Eurovision try outs, Tony starts his own band and goes touring around Finland.
Eurovision try outs went kinda bad, because I got influenza sequela right before it, and my voice wasn't working as well as possible. The influenza shows some symptoms again.
I gotta be able to get the best out of me in Saturday, Tony kicks himself and drinks some tea.
The Turunen brood has also the first born Timo.

(3/5/01) Dear Cesar, I am writing to you to thank you for assigning me the note to meet Tarja Turunen, the unmistakable and incredible singer of the Finnish band Nightwish. I will do it tomorrow at noon. I will ask her questions about everything (her visit with Nightwish in our country, the edition of Over The Hills And Far Away, the DVD that will be presented on Monday, her collaboration with Beto Vazquez, and other things). After that I will tell you how it was... Gabriel

(4/5/01) Dear Cesar, today... beauty... a lot, a lot... she is so nice that... and I don't even sing... she looked at me with those blue eyes... I want to go to Finla... the memories mistake me... and I asked her... and I don't know, maybe the meeting went out well... I already do not understand anything anymore... and after talking to her... nothing matters to me... Grab... Gabriel.

- First of all, it is great to have you in Buenos Aires once again. What brings you here this time?
- Well, the truth is that I really felt like taking a vacation. Just before coming here I had a very important exam in the music university where I am studying. In the last three years I couldn't, because I dedicated all my time to Nightwish, I didn't do anything related to my studies and couldn't focus on them, but in the last months I have studied a lot to take this exam and it went pretty well. After that I decided to take a vacation, even though I will of course be doing some promotion for Nightwish. When I went to Argentina, last July, I really liked it here and for me it is a pleasure to come here again.

- What do you remember from the concerts from last year?
- I remember being in a special position, because I had been very ill before coming. I especially remember a show in a small venue, Acatraz. I really liked this concert, the people were very close, it was a really great feeling. And of course, the people in Argentina.. are unbelievable! [laughs] Honestly, you can't compare them with people in Europe or in other places. The more south you go, the more crazy are the people.

- I was just going to ask you what's the difference between a concert in Finland and one in Argentina or Chile.
- Well, we have just recorded a live concert in Finland, most of all because it's the easiest way to do it. Anyhow, the people in Finland love the music as much as you do, but they don't show it. The mentality is a lot different. If you like something, you show it, if you don't like it, you do the same. I think it's brilliant.

- Or, they are rather still, they applaud in the end of the concert...
- Yes. They also sing the songs, but not as powerful as you do! I remember that, before going on the stage I hear everyone shouting and thought "Oh my god, I can't do it." I was so scared, with all those people screaming my name.. Or better said, many variants of my name! [laughs] But it was great in the end.

- One of the things that really impressed me was your stage presence. I really didn't know what to expect..
- You're not the only one, trust me! [laughs] There is a really nice story from the first time we played live. Nightwish was born as a project, and we had never thought of playing live. But things changed and lots of people wanted to see us. So the guys in the band were very nervous [laughs] they didn't know what to tell me, we didn't know how to arrange the concert, what we will do, what we will say, and we all planned to stay in the same position... at the time I was more a singing student than a singer (I am still studying now, but I know what I'm doing). Anyway, after we finished the show, and the guys said "Oh my god, you moved like an elk.", which was their way of telling me they liked and accepted it. When I'm on stage I don't think about what I'm doing, but what comes from the music. I moved a lot on the stage in South America, but if you watch us live nor or watch the DVD you'll see something has changed. My movements are a lot more secure.

- You have just given me the reason to ask you about the DVD (From Wished to Eternity - live)..
- It was a huge project that took a lot of time, not from us but from the people who organized it. We had great technics, great equipment, and except some problems that took place during the break, it came out very well. The DVD consists of material from a single show, in Tampere, which had to be planned really carefully. We have released it in Finland and in a few months it will be released in other countries as well.

- You are also releasing a mini-CD...
- Yes. We are also releasing a CD with that material at the same time. But this live CD was supposed to be released just in Finland. When people found out, everyone wanted to sign a contract with us. At the same time we were working on a single called "Over The Hills And Far Away" (the name of a Gary Moore cover) which contains, apart from the live songs, two new songs and a remake of the song "Astral Romance" from "Angels Fall First". Spinefarm decided to release a mini-CD with these three songs and six live ones, and it will be released in the rest of the world.

- Why does the mini-CD have the name of a Gary Moore cover?
- This is a question I have no answer for. I don't know, but I think it was because Tuomas loves this song.

- In the last years, the fanbase of Nightwish has increased. Today, you are knows as a successful band in many conners of the world. Do you feel any pressure because of this?
- Yes, of course. It was already like that when we released "Oceanborn" and we knew it would be the same with "Wishmaster". The number of the sold CDs creates pressure, but I think it can be positive. It's no problem as long as you're aware of what happens. I think you have to keep your mind awake, otherwise you are stuck in something that you already did and never learn something new.

- By the way, a few days ago I was browsing the official Nightwish page and I was distracted by a poll called "how do you want the next Nightwish albums to be?" and the 40%of the people (a total of 2663) voted for the option"I want them to be exactly the same".
- Yes! It is great that people don't want us to change, to say "Well, you are great, so don't change!". I don't know, there are lots of bands who have changed their style completely through the years and it makes people tremble because they don't know what to expect. But I don't think it will be the case with Nightwish. If you listen to the first album, then the second and then the third, you can already know some things about the fourth. But it's not a big change, you can listen to the songs and still know they are Nightwish songs, even though some things are different. For the fourth album we will use a choir and an orchestra, and Tuomas has already started to work on the material.

- Anything else you can tell us about the album?
- Well.. [laughs] that's all I can tell you, and we will enter the studio in January. That's all [laughs]. The CD we have just released is a gift for the fans, and we will need a lot of time to organize the fourth album. It's a big project.

- Until now, on the first three albums, Tuomas was in charge with composing the songs. Will the situation be the same with the fourth album or will more band members participate?
- Well, Emppu has composed with Tuomas some songs from "Oceanborn" and "Wishmaster". His style is rock-like. And about me, I don't think I will participate in it, I don't want to mic my personal things with Nightwish. No, I won't compose...

- What about the lyrics?
[Tarja makes a funny face]

- And what does this mean?
- [laughs] This means I will never do it. Tuomas is a genius and all Nightwish lyrics come from his visions. Nightwish was his idea, his dream.

- But do you ever write at home, for yourself?
- Yes, I do that. Maybe I will use them one day, but I don't know.

- I also wanted to ask you if you plan to sing in Finnish one day. Obviously I don't understand a word but the language seems very exotic and the music is very interesting.
- I asked Tuomas many times if he will write more lyrics in Finnish, and many people have sent me e-mails asking me this, but I'm pretty sure we won't do it.

- Is there any special reason?
- To be honest, I don't know. The next CD will be conceptual, but I don't know...

- Thank you, you said one more thing...
- yes. [laughs]

- I read that you got the platinum award because Wishmaster sold more than 40.000 copies in Finland. This says a lot about your country, but I would like you to tell me more. How popular is heavy metal in Finland?
- If a metal band manages to get their music on radio or TV it is great, but it's difficult. There are some heavy metal shows, but in general it is difficult for metal band to appear on a radio. For us it was pretty easy, since we have many ballads, and they are broadcast often, but this happens rarely. We sold 40.000 albums in Finland, which is a lot, even 20.000 - a gold award - was very much. And it is amazing for a heavy metal band to do this, because the metal market is not that big in Europe, Japan, and many other places. It's hard to sell metal CDs. But I can tell you that in the last years a lot of great Finnish heavy metal bands were founded and many have gotten in the top 40. For example when Children Of Bodom releases a CD, it gets on the first place. It's incredible.

- Do the other "legends" like Sentenced, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica have the same status as Nightwish?
- What happened to Nightwish is different. Even though we are a heavy metal band, people don't consider us just heavy metal, and that's because of my voice. There are lots of older people, who are even sixty or eighty years old who listen to us at the radio because they like the ballads, that side of our music. Otherwise a band can't sell 40.000 albums in Finland if they only play heavy metal.

- Let's change the subject. How was your participation in Beto Vazquez's Infinity?
- Our first contact was no more than a year ago, but I had my doubts and didn't know a lot about this project. At the time I was also very busy with my studies and Nightwish and had a million things to do. That's why, at the time I declined. But after that we met Beto and Marcelo, and we talked about it, they showed me a recording of the music and it started to interest me. The style is very different than what people are used to because of Nightwish. This was my first side project, so I was very nervous, and thought "Now everybody will ask me to sing in their projects! Aaah! What will I do?" [laughs]. Some people already asked me, but I think it's something very risky for me. I have to be very careful about what I will do in the future...

- Now, after it has been released, what do you think about the CD?
- I like the final result. It's a CD that has to be listened to very carefully and more than one time. It has a clear production, it is very direct, the songs have their beginnings and endings, the melodies are very nice and there is the use of different keyboard than I am used to. Of course, some things could have been handled more professionally, but there wasn't enough time. Anyway, I am happy about it.

- You give the sensation that you are very autocritycal..
- Yes, always. It is necessary to be critical, although not too much. I am always very critical.

- Are you the same when you sing for a heavy metal or for a classical audience?
- I can say that I am myself when I sing with Nightwish. When I go to the stage with Nightwish I am not that critical about me anymore, I feel free. But when I sing in a classical concert, with a piano on my side, and I sing just classical music or an aria, I am very critical with myself all the time. Everything has to be perfect, every note, every single small detail and what I do with my voice, what I do with my body. Everything. And this is something that perhaps makes you forget about the music itself.

- And how do you perceive the pressure of both genres?
- Both audiences are very conservative. The people from the classical audience critisizes me for singing in a heavy metal band and the heavy metal audience doesn't know what I'm doing there. Many are very happy that I am here, but they don't know what i will do next.

- It's true. Considering that you have always said that your favorite is the classical music, people wonder when this will change, if you will ever stop singing classical music...
- Yes, this is something that is always there. But I said a lot of times that I am continuing my studies, and that doesn't necessarily mean that I will quit Nightwish. For nothing. Of course there are compromises. We can't have very long tours like last year, we were very tired when we finished it. It is very tiresome for all singers because your own body is the instrument and you have to take very good care of it. If I drink two beers now I won't be able to sing tomorrow. So I don't drink, I don't smoke and I need to sleep a lot. If I don't get enough sleep before a concert I turn into a terrible person! [laughs]

- I wanted to ask you what are your favorite songs from the three Nightwish albums..
- I don't know, it's very hard because each album has its song.. From Angels Fall First I like Beauty And The Beast a lot, it has a very nice story. From Oceanborn I really like the cover, Walking In The Air, and Stargazers. That time I was starting to listen to heavy metal myself and it was an interesting period because I hadn't before. My older brother used to listen to AC/DC and Iron Maiden but I didn't. From Wishmaster I like Dead Boy's Poem, because it is a very special song for Tuomas. This might sound weird, but when I sing this song I can feel Tuomas, I feel what he felt when he wrote this song because I'm singing his story.

- Don't you feel weird when you sing Tuomas' songs? Not only because they were written by another person, but also because they were written by a person of the opposite sex..
- At first it was very strange, because I didn't know him too well. We had been at the same school but didn't know eachother well. Now I know that he is a very intelligent man and I'm very proud of him. Really, I am. I don't know if I am the only person in this band who really knows how he is like, because we haven't actually talked about it.

- Ok, now I have to criticize you a bit: when you came last year, you only played half of Passion and The Opera...
- Oh, no. [laughs]

- Yes, I know...
- No, you don't. [laughs] I remember the people's reaction when we stopped. Actually we never intended to play it entirely, it's very complicated. When you play live the conditions aren't the best, there is usually a lot of smoke and I need to breath properly and to focus on what I am doing. Anyway, we hope to be able to play it completely in the future, but like I said, we have never tried yet.

- Ok, that was all. Do you want to say something to the Nightwish fans?
- [shouts] It's excellent to be here! [laughs] I can't wait to come on Monday to see the people and to hear what they think about the DVD...

I: You are listening to "Noticiero de las Pampas" and we have someone here, who we can say is a part of the Argentinean but also international movement. We are here with Tarja Turunen. Hello.
Tarja: Hello, how are you?
I: Very well, fantastic. Some are surprized that the Finnish singer, who is very known from Nightwish, and also very successful with her solo career at the moment, speaks Spanish so well, but it really is like that.
Tarja: [laughs]
I: You are a bit afraid of talking Spanish..
Tarja: Yes... No...
I: ... but it's without a reason.
Tarja: Yes, I can talk a little bit. [laughs]
I: It's enough. Why did you want to take an interview in Spanish?
Tarja: First of all for me.
I: Ok, let's start by explaining the people a bit why it is that you spend so much time in Argentina.
Tarja: Yes, my husband is Argentinian, and I have been here a lot in the last eight, nine years and I like Argentina, I like the people, the food, everything. I really like it. I am more free here than in my country, Finland.
I: Really? Do you feel better here?
Tarja: Yes, I do. I feel really well.
I: You are not here all the time, but also in other places, right?
Tarja: Yes, I travel and work a lot, all the time, with my husband, we work together but we always travel a lot, but I feel that my place is also in Argentina.
I: Did you think, eight-nine years ago that this would happen one day?
Tarja: No, never. [laughs]
I: On the first tour with Nightwish in Argentina we saw Tarja and we never dreamed that you will have this kind of relashionship with this country. What happened then?
Tarja: We did the record at 4 in the morning, very late and I was dead. Dead, dead. Very tired. But I remember it.
I: Of course. And in the same day you were tired we forced you to take pictures on the pool table.
Tarja: [laughs] Yes, I remember that too.
I: Yes, and you were tired and we were taking pictures... How was it?
Tarja: Ok.
I: Ok?
Tarja: Yes, that's life. You never know.
I: There is a concert in Argentina soon, which is very important.
Tarja: Yes, in May.
I: In May.
Tarja: Yes.
I: And what's the difference between these concerts and the ones from last year?
Tarja: I do tours all the time, from my album "My Winter Storm". But these concerts will have some special songs, and in general, I want to have a more closer relashionship with the audience. And that's why there will be a concert in "Las Trastiendas"...
I: "La Trastienda".
Tarja: Yes. And it's a very small hall. That's why... For me it's very important.. something very special that I... My... my... my Spanish is... BAD!
I: No, no, calm down, it's very good, I...
Tarja: YES! If you understand... ! [laughs]
I: No, no, I understand. So the concerts will be more closer to the audience and will have some songs from your new album.
Tarja: Yes. NO! Not from this CD. Not yet. I am composing music, I am composing the lyrics and the songs for the new CD at the moment. But we will record it in the end of this year.
I: Aha, ok. And how do you feel, because in the last interview we talked about your split with Nightwish, how do you feel composing music and doing everything by yourself for your solo career?
Tarja: Uh..
I: My questions are not easy, they are in Spanish but not easy.
Tarja: No, it's not that easy for me to explain in Spanish, it's a new thing in my life, composing songs is very new for me. I never did this before with Nightwish. That's why I am really happy to have the possibility to do this. It's like.. It's a... force, a new force...
I: An impulse.
Tarja: An impulse, yes. And it should be so much easier for me to explain this in English. [laughs]
I: It's a lot easier for you to explain in English.
Tarja: Yes. That I'm very happy because things like that I need to have a strength, I need to have a corazon [heart] I need to have a.. I need to be brave enough to show my music for the people.
I: And this strength, this heart, this courage is to prove to the people for the first time. Some time ago, in Barcelona, we met and saw a very special Christmas concert. You did most of all classical songs, but also some songs that appeared on your first CD.
Tarja: Yes, the Christmas album. Not my debut album, just a Christmas CD.
I: For me it was really good, I was very chilled...
Tarja: Yes, like now. [laughs]
I: Like now.
Tarja: What happened? [laughs]
I: No, it was more special than another bands' CDs, it was something very rare and I think the audience received it very well. Do you have any intentions to do this kind of thing again?
Tarja: Yes, of course. I want to have these possibilities again in my future, I will have concerts in Finland and Europe of just classical music. This year. We are preparing a tour with an Argentinean tenor, but an actual tenor..
I: An actual tenor.. Is it secret or can you say who he is?
Tarja: Mmmmm.. it's like.. it's not sure yet...
I: A, ok, ok.
Tarja: It's not certain yet. But yes, I will have more classical concerts and with orchestras, or a pianist. I like these things.
I: Good. I have a certain question about My Winter Storm. How did you manage to record the Alice Cooper cover?
Tarja: Well... I like Alice Cooper. I am not a big fan, but...
I: And it's certain he doesn't have a voice like yours..
Tarja: No, more or less. The truth is that... Again. I was looking for a cover long time and it was really a problem because I really wanted to have one song covered. And Alice Cooper, at that time, in Finland, they were playing it a lot in rock radios, his songs. I don't know why, of course, he is a legend, and his song "Poison" of course I was just having like a joke, I was brainstorming, thinking ok how this song could be sang by me or productionwise... and how different the song should be sang by me and the production I would like to have for the song. So it was fun, to do that, it was really fun, and a pain in the ass in the studio, a lot of pain, with the band especially. They really didn't like the idea of making the song, they couldn't get away from the sound of 80's that easily, and that was, I needed to kick their asses a lot, in the studio, to say "this is gonna be fantastic, go for it, don't be shy. No, they didn't like that, how to make it sound like the rest of the album. They couldn't find a way easily.
I: Ok, let's translate. [translates in Spanish]
Tarja: So, but we finally managed to do it, I'm very happy with the song, of course it's quite different, but still respecting the original.
I: [translates in Spanish]

Part 2:
I: Ok, and with respect for what comes next. The same music, the same musicians, or the idea of the musicians you used last year.
Tarja: Yes. I like working with the same musicians. It could be possible that I will also have other musicians. Depends what the songs need. I feel that what I am composing now, how it will sound on the album, in general, and I will need to have musicians for that. It's like.. It's not like ok, I want to work only with these musicians. It;s like.. how to say.. what the song needs.
I: Did you ever think of having a stable band? So that "Tarja" is a band..
Tarja: How I feel now I do have a band with me, that supports me, very good people. They are very quiet, they are very nice and I'm very happy about them. But, music is like a big picture. It's a big picture of an art, and I want, if I have the sound in my head, I want to have that. I want in the end to reach that point. So, then, this is an open game. Everybody has understood that yes, I want to work with these guys, I love them all, I'm very happy with them, but ok, let's see what the future brings and everybody is aware of what's going on.
I: [translates]
At a moment, you were part of Nightwish and your popularity was huge. Most of all, in Finland, and you met very important people in your country.
Tarja: Yes, the president.
I: The president. You were very known because Nightwish did something very important. But in your country there was something were particular. How is it today? Has anything changed since the Nightwish split? I don't mean because you broke up with them, I mean that now you spend less time in Finland.
Tarja: Yes, I spend less time there and the people are very interested in what I do, and I still do things in Finland but not that much, I don't want to talk about things.. privacy? Yes, things like that I don't like. [laughs]
I: Yes, you get a lot of questions like that.
Tarja: Yes, because I am a very known person in Finland, and people are always like "Will you have babies?", "When?", "How many?" [laughs] No, ok. But it's ok. It's like that in Finland but it didn't change a lot. I have TV interviews, I do things with private companies (?), and everything. It's good.
I: And the shows, when you return there, are they especially emotional or just one more show?
Tarja: No. I do more classical concert in Finland now than rock concerts. I don't know why. It's a good question, but I don't know why it is like this, but I do a lot more classical music there.
I: Ok, so more than in the rest of the world.
Tarja: Yes.
I: And I have to ask, how is the relashionship the members of Nightwish?
Tarja: There is no relashionship.
I: They say that time heals scars, but so far nothing. Sure.
It amazed me to see how, even though the band said a lot of bad things about you, you kept your impressive attitude. I, for example, would have told them a lot of things that moment, but it wasn't like that in your case, you were a real lady.
Tarja: But, what can I do? [laughs]
I: No, no, it's not much you can do, that's true.
Tarja: No, I'm not interested in things like this. To talk about this in public. There were things happening since a lot of years inside the band. And now I'm not interested in what they do or say [about me].
I: It's a pity, because Nightwish could meet in various place, for example in Argentina, last year. Let's change the subject and talk about the title of your new album.
Tarja: Yes. What Lies Beneath.
I: What Lies Beneath. Aha. Is it a conceptional album or not?
Tarja: It's not a conceptional album, but it has a red line, that connects all the songs. It's called What Lies Beneath and all songs have something to do with the title. What lies beneath in us, what lies beneath in all the actions people are doing, that there is always something more behind the words, that are not in the surface, I mean that there are also songs about water. There are songs about me diving, my love for underwater world, what lies beneath under the surface. So What Lies Beneath is a big picture, you can understand that in many ways.
I: I didn't know you like diving.
Tarja: Yes, I enjoy diving, I have been doing this with my husband since many years and we are crazy about it.
I: In which places did you dive?
Tarja: In Venezuela, in Antigua, Thailand, Egypt, in Spain, in Argentina here, in cold water.
I: In Spain also..
Tarja: In Ibiza.
I: What do you like, the feeling of diving...?
Tarja: Yes, the feeling of diving. The feeling that I can leave everything aside.. all pain, everything I think about, all problems I have, I can leave them all out of my head. When I am under the water, everything is good. And the world there is so different, the colors...
I: And would you like to put some of these feelings or these concepts on the cover of CD?
Tarja: It can be.
I: Aha, interesting. What about some songs containing these feelings?
Tarja: Yes, yes. We already recorded some demos.
I: Oh, come on, I can'r be original at all! I thought that.. [laughs]
Tarja: No, no.
I: What genre will What Lies Beneath be?
Tarja: Ok, In English. [laughs] With My Winter Storm I was not 100% happy with the sound of the guitars. If there are guitars, they have to be very heavy. If there is a huge orchestra, there will be no guitars.
I: I understand.
Tarja: So, because those two elements are eating the sound, they are eating the possibilities of mixing the album bombastic. Having a big sound. The orchestra is so big, it has many instruments and the sound of it I want to have as clearly as possible. As in the soundtracks.
I: So the two instruments eat eachother's sounds.
Tarja: And the voice too.
I: So does the voice. So in order to have a bombastic sound like you said...
Tarja: And clear.
I: The point is that the orchestra sounds very good as an orchestra and the guitars sound good in metal, rock.. That's it, right?
Tarja: Yes.
I: Is this what you're trying to do on the next album?
Tarja: Yes.
I: And about the combination?
Tarja: I am composing new songs for the album, I have some really heavy songs and some quiet songs, combined with film music.
I: Yes. You like sountracks a lot. Perfect.
How was the people's reaction to your solo career?
Tarja: It's very interesting because there are many older people, many younger people, there is not such a stereotype of a Tarja fan today. So when I make concerts, there are many heavy metal people, rock audience, and also lovers of classical music. And then I am very happy to be able to make music that is making so many people interested of. So I am very happy about the results.
I: Is it like you had imagined?
Tarja: I don't know what I had imagined. [laughs] I don't know what I really was thinking, it's the beginning of my career, so of course I was having high hopes for things but you know, there are always more surprises than you really can think in advance.
I: So there were some positive surprises, but eventually the result satisfied you.
Tarja: Yes. Very good.
I: [talks about the city] ... I managed to extend my knowledge of the Finnish language.
Tarja: Huh?
I: Yes, because the first words in Finnish I heard were yours.
Tarja: Really?
I. Yes. "Minä rakastan sinua."
Tarja: I didn't know.
I: You are here talking in Spanish (or mostly in Spanish) and a few years ago, on the ABC program I asked you to say some words in Finnish, I didn't know any Finnish word then.
Tarja: Incredible.
I: I would like it if you would say something in Finnish like "see you soon, bye" and then explain what you said. A freeting for the Spanish people, a greeting for the Argentinean people.. you know.
Tarja: Hello, my lovely Spanish friends, I miss you a lot, I hope to see you at my concert in Zaragoza soon, and my Argentinean friends, I'm not missing you too much because I'm living here. [laughs] But I love you all.

Tarja Turunen: "The show will be powerful"

The lyrical soprano, rocker and keyboard player will play on the 20th May in Sambil.

The Finnish artist comes to Venezuela in holidays since 2 years.
"It's a paradise", she ensures.

The Finnish composer, keyboard player and lyrical soprano Tarja Turunen, 31 years old, has already stepped on Venezuelan soil. "2 years ago I went on holiday to Venezuela. I was in Los Roques and Morrocoy on beaches and diving! There is a paradise," recalls the singer from here home in Finland.

The former vocalist of symphonic metal quintet Nightwish prepares her first concert from the "Storm Returns to America" tour in Caracas next May 20th in the amphitheater of Sambil.

And even though she performs Nightwish songs during her shows, Tarja Turunen says that the thought of rejoining Nightwish is not going through her mind. "I am experiencing a new level of creativity that doesn't allow me to think of those things. I live every day my creativity, so I don't know how things will be musically speaking in ten years or more.

What are you preparing for the concert in Venezuela?
I am preparing something special. There are a lot of surprises for those who see me for the first time. I am sure they will be surprised. There will not only be an atmosphere of heavy metal, but I will also be playing the piano. The atmosphere will be dramatic, warm and bombastic. It will be powerful.

You were invited as a judge in the Finnish "Idols" contest. Do you think that these shows show how talents develop?

I was invited only as a show juror. It was fun being there, but otherwise was not able to give my honest opinion, it was more like, uhmm ... I had to be very careful because they are young people seeking a place and I felt sensitive for them. And I do not know if they become big stars, but in the end it is very subjective case.

Yes, you are also vulnerable to being judged ...
Exactly! One is also part of that. I like the music and the audience can judge. There are people who love what I do and others will say: "I don't like this record." That is the reality.

Your debut album, My Winter Storm, seems like a soundtrack that brings together a thousadn emotions. Did you have this feeling while recording it?
It's exactly what I had in mind. The design, images, characters, music ... everything is like a soundtrack. I am a collector of soundtracks, especially classical ones.

Which soundtracks did you have in mind while composing My Winter Storm?
All these effects of pounding drums, bells, noises you hear on the disc were made by the same man who did the soundtrack for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (Hans Zimmer), so I'm happy about that. He is a great composer.

Will you sing a cover of Poison or Smells like Teen Spirit?
I don't know. I confess that I prefer to do duets, but it will be surprising. I like to surprise people.

You aressociated with symphonic metal, opera, pop, classical ... but you are a singer.
Exactly, you stole my words. I am a singer.

Returning once again to her second home in Argentina, the Finnish singer gave her first Spanish interview in "Noticiero de las Pampas". The diva told us about her desires and plans, told John Parodi more about the next stops in her tour, and revealed preliminary ideas about her second albums. Tarja went to La Nave de Oseberg for an intense day of radio, interviews and photoshoots with several media, including the local fan club. While sitting at the table, and the microphones and the technical things of the studio were being fixed for the show of Cesar Fuentes Rodriguez (the same studio where Rata Blanca recorded their last albums) the Finnish star, today mostly based in Buenos Aired, started the fire with us and sent warm greetings to Heavy Rock and to her Spanish fans. To the fire of the eternal quality of her simplicity and ease, here are the outgoing moments of an interview without waste.

You have been touring for over one year. Do you feel changed as an artist?
Tarja: I feel a lot more confident after this first stage. I have grown a lot as an artist, as a singer and as a person. I can use this advantage to be aware of the trends and happy that I might have a future! [laughs] I can compose at a more intense pace, and with this freedom gives me the feeling that I am at the beginning of my career, and not like some kind of epilogue of my previous career.

Are you happy to be "your own boss"?
Tarja: It has its advantages, why should I deny. The debate of ideas and the reception of suggestions have always been fruitful, but I have a lot more creative freedom now, and now it is the exact moment of my career when I think I should be capitalizing as much as I can. I feel more respected by the people I work with, which is of utmost importance.

What did you learn that you hadn't while you were with Nightwish?
Tarja: The perch in my short career is everything I think and feel and that I get to listen to my work without any kind of filter. For me this was a major turn from my relashionship with Nightwish.

Now that you have more control on what you are composing did you find new sources of inspiration?
Tarja: Generally I think I find inspiration in what most artists do: facts or situations that change me in good or bad, nice things or transcendent emotional content. The great thing is that now I have the freedom to chose if I want to compose or take things from me clean out, or the other way around, simply improvising with my voice, the piano or the music that surrounds me.

Which are the external stimuli? Did, for example, the recent tragedies in Finnish schools, similar to the massacre from Colombia from 1999, move you?
Tarja: Of course, those are two very sad things that affected us all in Finland. It is supposed that we are a good country, but tragedies like these reveal social problems, latent in our culture. We have high standards of live, but we drag (especially my generation and the generation of my parents) a legacy of war which had its effect on the last decades. Either our last war [N.R with Russia] in 1939 or with a neutral nation trapped in a conflict between the great European powers, is a thing that we have failed to resolve completely even until today. I think that this closed mentality is due to the reluctance to bring to the surface and openly discuss all of these symptoms to remove the dirt under the carpet, in a nutshell. This is a problem that I haven't seen in most anglo-saxon countries like the U.S., not to mention Argentina, where there is a lot more communication between people.

In the last years, many metal bands - especially from Europe - started to combine classical music and metal. Has it gotten to a point where you can't innovate it more? How do you approach your work so that it will sound fresh?
Tarja: This is a problem that has become complicated in the compositional level for all the bands that fused heavy metal with orchestral arrangements. Both genres definitely share the grandiloquent element, and the relative ease of incorporating voices in operas, but the things start to get complicated immediately. It is difficult to unite the sound of an orchestra with appropiate heavy metal instruments, without one of them covering the other. Practically you can't sacrifice the power of electric guitars or the power of the orchestra or an operatic voice. Those are two powerful elements, but they are also very different. My approach that I find at the moment most comfortable while composing is to basically eliminate all the elements that "eat" the original sound. This means: the orchestra alone, or the sound of guitars without the orchestra, maybe leaving some background harmonies, or the most proeminent leitmotives. This is exactly the step forward that I want to take in my next album. In less words: the orchestra, or the heavy guitars, but less fusion between them.

What else can you tell us about the next album?
Tarja: It is called "What Lies Beneath", I have composed about thirty songs, but I don't know how many will be included on the CD. I will enter the studio in the end of this year, even though this is the last stretch of this tour, which will include three or four shows here in Buenos Aires in May.

With so many projects going on, do you still have enough time for classical music?
Tarja: I am very involved in the classical music. I have plans to go on a tour this year, sharing the stage with a tenor. What makes me happy about this kind of music is that I can focus in particular better on my voice. It allows me to notice what needs adjustment. But at the same time I have to confess that I don't feel ready for performing a whole opera. That time will definitely come, but at the moment there is a lot that needs to be polished. Anyway, I am practising every day, for all styles, not just classical, but I have to admit my intention of enhancing the ambience of each disc.

What do you have to say about the way female fronted bands have proliferated in the operatic style?
Tarja: It is a very strange phenomenon, every time more bands and people full of talent, like Liv Kristine among many others. Some time ago I was at a gothic metal festival in Leipzig (Germany) as a headliner and it was a very interesting experience, I met many singers and found out more about them. 10-12 years ago when I started to sing with Nightwish I knew there were many singers like these, but not as many as now. I am proud for some moments, I was proud and astonished at the same time to see how many of these bands were female fronted! I asked myself "What the hell has happened here?" [laughs]

What do you think about the new sound of Nightwish, with such a different voice?
Tarja: I wish them all the best. This is all I will say on this matter.

What impact do you think Nightwish had on your style?
Tarja: What happened with all the other artists, what is ultimately reflected in my music is always a bit far from my original vision. In my case, it is impossible to put the metal elements aside. I definitely realized that I tend to sound more like American heavy metal than the European heavy metal sound, marked by Nightwish. This is because of the music that I listen to - Korn and Slipknot to give some examples - but this does not get in the way ofmy European origins, in fact I will do everything possible to have the producer of In Flames' latest labum, for the album that will follow after "What Lies Beneath".

Do you think that you will gradually get rid of the Nightwish material in your shows after you reach more musical age?
Tarja: Not at all. Nightwish was a big part of my life and a part of it will always be in my shows. But in time there could be less and less, after all they are Tarja shows, not Nightwish. Of course there are metal fans at my concerts, and they are welcome, but since I started my solo career in Europe I noticed that there are also people who discovered my music in other ways, and who appreciate the atmosphere of the music and the live staging, or the melancholy, there's always the backdrop to my compositions and the cover art in booklet. There have also veen more "orthodox" metal fans, who told me that they had discovered a new side of metal in "My Winter Storm". I was very proud.

In retrospective, was a mistake to lead the lifestyle of a heavy metal band for so many years?
Tarja: I have never seen heavy metal as a burden I have to cope with, because it allowed me to live. I have to say that it is definitely not easy to be a soprano singer in a heavy metal band, especially when everything was in an experimental phase. I had to learn, practice and experiment a lot so that things could work. And I also had to adapt to the lifestyle that comes "with the package": neverending tours, the fragile state of my vocal chords, being exposed to infections because of traveling together with so many people, etc. The good thing about composing and working in an independent way is that I can plan in advance and more freely how many gigs I want to have, when and how much free time to have between them. Being a boss of my own allows me to take more care about my health, which is the most important thing I have.

Tarja Turunen’s My Winter Storm album didn’t get tons of love in Decibel. But that’s explainable. Our target audience digs blasting, crusting, and horns throwing stuff. Music girls love to hate. Flowery, Baroque-like things just aren’t adored by the Deci-staff and Deci-faithful. Well, unless you’re Adrien Begrand, Rod Smith or me. We’re sensitive scribes (don’t tell anyone that).

Loads of drama surrounded her departure from Finnish megastars Nightwish in 2005. All that’s past Tarja now. Her debut album expectedly went to #1 in Finland, where it also holds platinum status. It also rocked the charts in Russia, Germany and Austria. Nightwish may’ve catapulted Tarja into the hearts of teary-eyed metallers the world over, but she’s now on her own and wouldn’t have it any other way.

What’s going on in Tarja’s world?
Well, the first album is out. It has been nice for it to be so successful. I’ve been working quite a lot with that. It was the first time I was able to compose songs on my own. It was fantastic. It’s learning experience. I’ve been touring a lot for this album. I’ve done Europe three times and South America once. Now, I’m coming to the USA, Canada, and some other countries in Latin America.

You’ve been here before with Nightwish.
Yes. Yes, I’ve been. I have an official fanclub called Winter Storm. They’re in the USA. So, I really hope to see some of those people. I’m very happy. I’m working on the next album, composing songs for an album to be released next year. If everything goes fine. [Laughs]

Were you ever insecure about working outside of Nightwish?
Definitely, the biggest challenge was making sure everyone understood what the heck I was going after. Sound- and music-wise. The record company, which is a new record company for me, understood that I’m not seeking an album that’s only heavy metal. An album that is categorized in one category. They understood I come from a different perspective with a different background. I have to somehow tell my story with the album. That was the biggest challenge. Making sure everyone understood what I was going for. And then to be the only person responsible for everything was a lot of work. But I was so lucky to have all these beautiful people working with me. The band is great. Some of those musicians are still part of my band. It’s been a good learning experience. Writing the music was a big step for me. I needed the courage to go for it.

Did you know exactly what you wanted to do musically?
Yeah, I was able to see it clearly from the beginning. I really fought for the sound I wanted. It was not an easy way to go, but from the beginning I knew it was the only way. Definitely.

There’s a lot of drama regarding your departure from Nightwish. Have you read Mape Ollila’s Once upon a Nightwish book?
No, I haven’t read the book.

Have you ever wanted to seek guidance from your former bandmates?
No, it never occurred to me. I’m very aware of what I want and how I live my life. I’m really OK with everything.

You mentioned a new album. Can we expect a similar album to My Winter Storm?
Variety will exist. I’ll cut it short. I feel that I’m a singer. I can’t be categorized. People tend to categorize you. For me, it has never been easy like that. I do not feel it’s a weak point—it’s a strength actually—for me to sing heavy metal and classical music. I’ve worked hard. I work on my voice. That’s still going on. For the first album, I missed a bit of the harder side of me. When everything was done, I wasn’t satisfied with the guitar sound. It wasn’t as powerful as I was expecting. That is something I’m going for on the new album. The heavier parts need to pop out. There will be variety in the songs.

My Winter Storm was very orchestral…
…I love that. It’s very important to me.

What I liked was that it didn’t sound like a bunch of layered keyboards.
Yeah, it’s a real one. [Laughs] Definitely.

You’ll hire an orchestra for the new album?
Yes. I hope that I can work with the same guys. I think they’re expecting to work with me on future albums. They’re guys from Los Angeles. They’ve been working for most of their careers in film music. They are really talented. They’re arranging the orchestra, composing soundtracks and they were very helpful when I was putting the album together. I’ll meet them when I go to Los Angeles. I’m really looking forward to what we’re going to come up with.

Will the next album be a spring or a summer album?
[Laughs] Was my last album a winter album? I don’t know. Actually, the next album will be more personal. I don’t think there will be songs on the album that anybody but me will compose. I don’t think seek someone else’s songs. This album needs to be really personal. All the aspects of my life will be there. My life in general. Living in two different cultures in Argentina and Finland. This all has to do with my music.

What’s it like to live in Argentina? As a Finn.
I’ve been a lucky girl. I’ve traveled a lot. When I was a little girl I traveled with my parents in Europe and in the USA. It was, for me, a life-changing experience. I realized I needed to be more open-minded, seeing different cultures and people. It was a learning experience to see people can survive the same situations but differently. There is never one way to do things. Stuff like that. With Nightwish, I traveled a lot. Now, I seek to perform in places I’ve never been. To live in Argentina…I love the country. I love the people. They’re open-minded. They have teaching me a lot to open up about myself. To talk about problems. Inner thoughts.

That’s not very Finnish of you.
Really. I’m serious. It’s not the culture my homeland supports. We are very cold and closed people. We are not too open to discuss why you don’t like what you do, for example. There’s a definite difference. But it hasn’t been a problem. I’m so enjoying the situation.

On a related note, do you feel strange putting personal things out there in your music and lyrics?
Ahh, that was a step I took with My Winter Storm. It was a brave step I needed to take. I was very nervous in the beginning. I didn’t know how people would react. I didn’t know if people would think I was chicken chick. I was nervous that the music wouldn’t be clever. Stuff like that. I had lots of thoughts like that. I had people to encourage me. They gave me support. I then realized there’s nothing for me to lose. If it’s from the bottom of my heart, people will feel that. The message will go through. The reality is I can’t make music for everybody’s taste. You can only make music for yourself. If other people like it then it’s a beautiful thing. [Laughs] All this is behind me now. I enjoy facing my fears. By the way, I got my first grand piano today in my home. After this interview, I’m going to run to it. It’s beautiful to be able to create something on your own.

A grand piano. What’s the first thing you played on it?
Well, I had the pleasure to play on it a couple of times. It’s a very old Bechstein, a German piano from 1928. It has been fully restored. Beautifully done. Except the outside parts. It’s a very old shiny black piano. I think the first thing I played on it was something very moody.

I kind of picture you playing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
[Laughs] No way in hell! I’m a moody player.

The former Nightwish singer confesses that she is a fan of Ciclon and Miramar and believes she is closer to classical music, but she is the most known female metal vocalist and was greeted by the president of Finland, also called Tarja! A raven of iron.

If we were to define the Olympus of the voices of the metal, the female share will have to be the unobjectionable Tarja Turunen, although she doesn't consider herself "a heavy girl". The reason is her virtues (the good voice and the cute face are equally indispensable), but it is also true that opponents of stem lacks: none other was able to seal the fate of a band as Tarja did with Nightwish, a group that is reconstituted with a replacement without her, and who is looked askew at by the public. Her departure from the Finnish group (she was shockingly dismissed in late 2005, as she admitted in tears) left the media to tell a story that promised a better fate in the firmament of European metal.

Tarja still has a lot of charisma and magnetism after the split with Nightwish, and this was proved when she released her debut album which had a very big impact on the market made by men for men.
In Argentina, the numbers speak for themselves: the first show was in September, on the Obras Stadium, and ten moths after she comes back with four other concerts (there few tickets left for her concert in Teatro des Flores on Saturday and for the concerts at La Trastienda on Tuesday and Wednesday). She continues to present her solo album, My Winter Storm and this time she is accompanied by musicians who worked with Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage and Blind Guardian. This will be her second visit without Nightwish, except the Noche Escandinava tours in 2002 and 2004, when she was accompanied by a German mezzosoprano and a soprano from her country.

- Do you feel closer to classical music or metal?
- I have been studying classical music since I was 6 years old and it will always be my passion. My introduction into the metal was a decision I took later and it took me a long time to get used to the obstacles and hard work. Today I feel privileged to have been able to cross both borders and have an international career as a singer, something that very few girls in the world could achieve.

- You are a part of the elite of European metal. Would you prefer to have picked opera instead?
-It would have been a nice thing, but it is really very difficult and takes several years. Anyway, I do not consider myself just a singer of rock or metal, but directly, a singer.

- There is a song where you say that you now walk alone. Did you do the catharsis of your expulsion from Nightwish through your first solo album?
- The song "I Walk Alone" has nothing to do with my departure from Nightwish. I was not even the one who wrote it but two Swedish composers, but it is funny that I see a totally different meaning than it was supposed to. That song inspired me to call my fans who support me "my winter storm", because I have been given the power and energy that keeps me alive and awake in the way of music.

-You participated in some events organized by the government of Finland. What did you do with president Tarja Halonen?
-I was invited to the celebration of the Finnish Independence Day in 2003, where the president gave me recognition as an artist. I don't keep in touch with her other than that, though I can certainly admit that our political situation is stable, the democracy works pretty well and there is not much corruption. It is also one of the leading countries in regard to the rights of women.

- How is Argentina compared to Finland?
-The people here are kind and very open minded, which in turn helped me to open myself more. In addition, the food is excellent and the weather is perfect for me. The sad thing is the big difference between rich and poor, and the insecurity. In Europe, people generally do not understand the situation of Argentina. Corruption has been around for a long time and is difficult to change that because the people are already used to this. It's like a big wheel of problems coming and going, it never changes for the better. The basics do not works: Justice should be fair.

Her opinion is the rigor of those who live much of the year in Buenos Aires and a few laps until it sticks to the interior of Argentina: "I love Miramar and try to enjoy its tranquility and charm whenever I can, because the sea and wind there help me forget all my chaotic life. I also like other places, like Bariloche, Iguazú, Puerto Madryn and Jujuy," said the good woman from the cold and distant land, who yearns to know Ushuaia. She is not yet fully fluent in Spanish, which however does not prevent you from claiming her affinity for the folk's passion: football.

- You proclaimed yourself a fan of San Lorenzo, like Viggo Mortensen. What is your link to the real football?
- I have seen many games in the stadium of San Lorenzo and I am a member of the club. The feeling here is incredible: seeing people sing and get excited is beautiful. How football connects to many people is wonderful. I've got to love football to marry an Argentine because, obviously, it comes in the package! Of course I know that Viggo Mortensen is a crazy fan of San Lorenzo. It would be nice to meet him one day at a game of the Ravens!

Tarja: Without hesitation, I would be a lion. This is my zodiac sign! This animal is me altogether.

-If you were a country?
Tarja: A country ... I think I would be Finland. I share my life between 2 countries, Finland and Argentina, but I am very loyal to my roots. I know where I come from ... I am a product of Finland, the country will remain forever my homeland.

-If you were a man?
Tarja: Ha, ha! Interesting ... After reflection, I think I would be my little brother. He is so talented in music ... I'm not jealous, but I sincerely believe in him, I am sure he has the potential to become a famous person. Let's say if I were a man, I would be his twin or something like this (laughs)!

-If you were afraid of something?
Tarja: I hate flying planes. I'm very scared when there are turbulences. Otherwise I hate insects and spiders. I have arachnophobia. So if I was afraid I would be arachnophobic!

Tarja: Let me think ... I think I would be a bow. It is a symbol of power, it helps build up someone's strength and launches arrows far.

-If you were a language?
Tarja: I would be Spanish. I love this language! It is very beautiful and very sensual. I speak a little Spanish, but I want to improve myself. My goal is to one day sing a song in Spanish. I know I will do it, but it remains for me to know when!

-If you were a movie?
Tarja: Someone should seriously look into the history of Nightwish to write a script (laughs)! So many exciting things have happened in the group that the film would be very interesting.

-If you were a book?
Tarja: I would my diary! I do not really want one now, but in the past, I scribbled many pages. Almost every day I tell myself that I should write for me on a daily basis, because there are many moments of my life that I lost, of the passages I have forgotten. It's a pity. If only I had recorded all these experiences in a book, they wouldn't forgotten ...

-If you were a movie soundtrack?
Tarja: The soundtrack Tuomas will compose one day, when the opportunity arises. One of his dreams! It's not for right now. At least there are no plans in that direction yet.

-If you were an opera?
Tarja: I think I would be a modern opera composed by a Finn. Especially one who was thinking of me when writing the lead role. I do not know the name of this opera, but the performances would be in 2006. I would keep the role of a witch. It would a drama in which there are 2 main roles: a witch and a witch. The action takes place in Lapland, northern Finland. The witch is supposed to be strong, beautiful and ambitious. It conflicts with the sorcerer and the two elements against one another. I will need to dance, sing ...
Before Nightwish, I was practicing to dance, I even participated in some competitions. I unfortunately broke a leg and I had to stop. This was not to make a career, just a pleasure, a hobby. I hope I can still move my buttocks in the opera (laughs)!

-If you were message for future generations?
Tarja: I think I'm one of the worst choices to send a message! I did not specifically claim to do ... I always found ridiculous types of speeches: "Do not fight, do not do stupid things in the name of your religion" (laughs)! For my part, I tried to show throughout my life that you can stay positive when it is not so easy to be a rock singer and lead the life we have. Every day I try to remind people who forget that life has its good sides. For me, it is necessary to find positive things in life in order not to sink into depression. it allows you to move forward. That, I think it would be my message.
