Re: Interviuri cu Tarja
Interviul cu Tarja si Jyrki, tradus de Afrodite:
- Spoiler:
Interviewer: Hello Tarja, how is your spring going?
Tarja: Phew, in a rush! Lovely to have light, but busy, lots of work. I finished the tour in South-America a few weeks ago, after that I’ve been writing new song for the new album, a lot of them. Somehow this spring, light and feeling good have caused me to write a lot of material. And tomorrow with the Allegro train to Saint Petersburg for the new European tour that lasts for four weeks. So busy.
I: When will you be releasing a new album?
T: That I can’t say at this point. Now during the summer, hopefully by the end of this summer, I’ll have finished all of the songs. And then we’ll see. When the Lord will allow. (Note: She uses the first part of a Finnish saying ‘Jos Luoja suo, eikä salama iske’ = ‘If the Lord allows and lightning doesn’t strike.)
I: Tell us a bit, what kind of an album is coming out?
T: Well, rock without a doubt. Plus some of that sensitive me, I really love changing the mood, going from gloominess, well not so much from gloominess, but from the feeling of darkness to the light. These two things live in me so well in balance. I love to rock out and the church concerts, the sensibility, the two are so well in balance.
I: What about tonight, what do you expect from tonight?
T: Well, gosh, this is really a world-premiere with Jyrki. We get to perform together my newest single, Underneath and.. Jyrki, come!
Jyrki69: Good day!
T&I: Good day!
I: I was just asking, what are you expecting from tonight? Tarja told you’ll be singing her new single together.
J: Yeah, we’ll be also in a way carrying out the idea of Easter. This has a pious side to it, we have recorded this for charity for Unicef and now performing it live in a charity concert. The song is pious enough that it fits Easter and a way to spend Easter this way is beautiful as is the song.. and my duet partner too.
T: Oh you.. always!
J: Now she’s blushing.
T: Jyrki!
I: What does charity in general mean to you?
T: Even one person can do a lot of good. That has been proved. Always when I’ve had the chance I have taken it and Jyrki has done the work for many many years.
J: I’m the Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef. The idea comes from.. If I have the chance to create entertainment that allows people to escape everyday life and I can create something that interests people, of course I want to use that power to do good. Because as you know it all comes back to you. It’s a sincere thought and gives a good feeling. I get people to clap and show anything during a gig, so sometimes it’s nice to do something concrete and real.
T: But through music, music is a lovely thing and no matter what happens in the world, music has an intense power, to help when you’re feeling bad. So let’s hope we have at least some kind of power tonight.
J: Of course.
I: Can you also tell us what you have been doing this spring?
J: I just came from a tour in Europe, we toured Europe for a month. Left from Manchester and ended up in Stockholm, the most southern spot was near Rome, so I’ve been in the tour bus watching spring progress.
T: Well slept.
J: Yup, really. Plus 30 degrees outside. Thousands of people clapping and were exited. Now I’ve been trying to save my voice for this show..
T: It’ll go well.
J: Yeah. With that strength.
I: I still have to ask you, you’ve perhaps been following Idols, who is you favorite to win?
J: Help! Like she doesn’t live here and I haven’t been in Finland. I really don’t know. Tell us something.
T: I have no clue.. Yes, tell us, what are the candidates like!
I: Now we have three candidates, two men and one woman and all good candidates.
T: Well, tonight we will hear them.
J: Yeah and Finland is such a small country, we need new people to bring delight. So competitions like this are welcomed and welcome to the group to the three. And more, everyone who was involved, there’s surely a place for everyone.
I: Thank you and have a lovely night!
T&J: Thank you.

Tarja Turunen about her husband : Our marriage is perfect
Tarja Turunen, who’s doing her solo career after Nightwish, wants a baby
Tarja Turunen (34), who performs on Easter at Idols Tekee hyvää- concert, now dreams of offspring.
- Oh, is my tummy bulging? No, but I have a bad case of baby fever. Me and Marcelo would be ready to have a family right away, since we have a great marriage and he’s the perfect man.
Tarja, who flew to the concert from Italy, hopes to have a child in the near future.
- I hope it happens very soon. We will raise the child in Barcelona, where we’ve build a Finnish home. We even have a sauna!
When she’s in Finland, she travels to her parent’s house to the sceneries of childhood.
- The last time I was in Kitee a week ago, when we celebrated our dad’s 70th birthday, the singer says. The couple has put their house in Kuusankoski on sale.
From the concert Tarja continued straight to Russia where she will perform at the end of the week. In the summer she will concentrate on summer festivals and making the new album. Turunen will do her only gig in Finland at Savonlinna Opera Festival.
- Even I don’t understand how I manage all this rotation. I felt for the first time last year that I have to slow down. Even though it was a great year, I got to do great concerts and release an album. I have to be glad that I have enough work.
- During the summer I will concentrate on writing and composing songs, that will be done all over the world. Depending on who I work with.

Tarja Turunen warns the Idols-finalists: The start of a career can be tough
The heavy-opera star Tarja Turunen gave the Idols singers a few important pieces of advice for their future careers. The well-known star emphasized that an artist’s life isn’t all glamour.
Tarja Turunen became known as the singer Nightwish, since then she’s doing her solo career and performed at the Idols tekee hyvää- concert. The singer says she’s followed the ongoing Idols season randomly.
Backstage the singer star told a few tips for the upcoming artists. Many of the finalists from the Idols contest will probably start their music careers, which won’t always just be pats on the back.
- It will inevitably be tough. You have to also get those bad experiences, because they allow you to grow and become a better artist, Turunen highlighted.

"It’s particularly the every day things in life which are Tarja Turunen’s source of inspiration of her creativity. Thus she would be in the wrong place on a psychiatrist’s couch. This doesn’t count for our “Philosofa” though.
“Dreams always have just one owner. This is the reason why dreamers are so lonely”
Erma Louise Bombeck (US writer, 1927-1996)
I would describe myself as a dreamer but I don’t feel lonely because of that. I feel rather alive because I try to make my dreams come true.
"Friendship sometimes leads to love but love seldom to friendship."
Charles Caleb Colton (English writer, 1780-1832)
There could be some truth in that. Luckily I don’t have any specific experiences with that because I always try to separate friendship and love.
"I fear that some day a thing loses its meaning completely if it is observed long enough."
Andy Warhol (American artist, 1928 – 1987)
I have learned to always have a second look at every thing. A lot of things in life appear in another light then.
"It’s the biggest mistake in life to fear making mistakes."
Elbert Hubbard (American philosopher, 1856-1915)
That’s right! Time is too short to spend the days next to a permanent fear because you only live once.
"Nobody cares what’s right at their feet. We are all staring up to the stars."
Quintus Ennius (Roman poet, 239 BC – 169 BC)
I don’t agree with this statement because I never wanted to reach for the stars. To me it’s important that you are aware of what and why you do something. Building some dream castles never were my kind of thing.
"Art is the strongest form of individualism the world knows."
Oscar Wilde (British witer, 1854 – 1900)
Artists have the unique priviledge to present themselves as individualists because we create things that might last forever. How many other people can claim this?

SUMMERBOOK
Musician Tarja Turunen
I'm reading right now:
- I mostly read literature translated into English and at the moment I'm half way through Paulo Coelho's Zahir. A good summerbook has positive thoughts and light and gives you energy. A paperback is easy to read lying on the beach.
Next I'll read:
- A book that is realeased in Finland this autumn: Paulo Coelho's Aleph. I'm a big fan of his.
A book that I didn't finish:
- Due to lack of time I don't read so much, so when I pick up a book I always finish it as well.

Afrodite wrote:Article from yesterday's Ilta-Sanomat: here.
Translation:
Never mind the criticism!
Tarja Turunen faced exceptionally harsh criticism from her performance the Opera festival, but she enjoyed the performance.
Soprano Tarja Turunen, 33, performed last Sunday with star tenor José Cura in a concert at Savonlinna Opera festival. The singer describes the performance as an experience.
- I enjoyed it so much. It was an amazing experience to sing with such a great tenor, Turunen tells IS.
The music experts following the concert didn't agree. Music reprter Vesa Sirén from Helsingin Sanomat called half of the concert qualitylessly sang entertaiment. The song 'Not While I'm Around' from the musical 'Sweeney Todd' he described a disgusting performance in which "both Turunen and Cura sang qualitylessly".
Also the concert review in newspaper Itä-Savo wondered why Tarja Turunen was wanted to perform with an opera singer.
The soprano was invited to perform in Olavinlinna at the beginning of the year and she was flattered.
- It was really a great experience! He handled me very well and talked so nicely eventhough he didn't have to. Cura is an amazing artist and a great person, Turunen praises.
The negative criticism won't stop Turunen, since the Tarja Turunen Band will perform on Saturday on the Saimaa Open Air festival. Besides her own solo gig she will perform with the legendary The Scorpions. The news was confirmed on Wednesday.
- It's really great! Great to see the guys and sing together. This is our first live performance. Earlier we've performed together in a big German tv-broadcast to millions of people.
Turunen will at least sing on the gig 'The Good Die Young'-duet that is on the band's album 'Sting In The Tail' released in March. The band has announced it to be their last album.
Turunen waits to be on the same stage as her childhood idol Bonnie Tyler.
- When I was a little girl, I had a Bonnie-poster on my wall. I was 12 when I took a train from Kitee to Helsinki to go see her at concert. Great to be on the same festival with her, and on the same day. That's a big deal.
Summer has been a more quiet time for Turunen after the stressful spring. She has concentrated on gigs and making music for her third solo album. Turunen would like to have the songs ready to be produced by the end of the summer. The material is guided by rock, film music and harmonic melodies.
The singer isn't afraid to perform her own music to the world anymore.
- I feel good at making music nowadays. I'm able to enjoy. The biggest step has been taken.
Dreams of a baby
Tarja Turunen has been married to her Argentinean husband Marcelo Cabuli since 2003.
- Marcelo said recently that hey honey, it's amazing that we've been together 24/7 for the last seven years and it isn't weighing much, Turunen laughs.
- We have an amazing relationship.
Turunen waits that in the future they'll have love, happiness and chilren too.
- We are planning to have children if the Lord grants.
Turunen thinks there isn't a right time for a baby. She still hopes it wouldn't take too many years.
- When I look at little toddlers on the street I have a different feeling. I've noticed a change in my feelings, I've never felt this way.
4 pictures
1. Tarja glowed harsh rock-charisma as the frontwoman of Nightwish in Ruisrock on 2000. At that point everything was still good in the band.
2. Husband Marcelo Cabuli stod by his wife in the dismissal sensation on 2005.
3. Rock stages were changed into opare arenas when Tarja performed on the Savonlinna Opera Festival with Raimo Sirkiä on 2006.
4. Tarja caused a stirr with a rockish outfit on the Idols Tekee Hyvää concert on Easter. The bold leather outfit was like a breeze from her Nightwish times.

First classical album on its way!
Crossgenre-face Tarja Turunen
Tarja Turunen’s album My winter storm will be awarded in Germany with a gold record on August 20th. Turunen is the first Finnish solo artist that has reached the sale of a gold album in Germany. This autumn the singer will concentrate on classical singing.
The right time for a classical album
Tarja Turunen’s first full classical album will be recorded at the end of November.
”I feel good about it. I feel ready for this step”, she reveals.
The recording will include well-known and rarely heard Ave Maria- songs from different composers. There will also be Turunen’s own version. Recording Ave Marias was organist Kalevi Kiviniemi’s idea. The two have worked together since 2006. At least a harp, cello, organ and female choir is heard on the album. The instrumentation and repertoire is looking for its final shape.
Composing opens a new world
Tarja Turunen makes songs her self and with her composer friends.
”With composing a whole new world has opened up for me. I learn new things every day”, Tarja rejoices.
Tarja is influenced by the people and events she faces on her trips.
”I feel that I have a rich life. It’s good to write about that. I also handle in my composiotitions the misery I have seen in different parts of the world. People have the same kind of problems everywhere.”
Tarja tells that tones from rock and film music can be heard in her music. The classical aspect and sinfonic elements are always present.
Rock singing based on classical knowledge
Tarja Turunen’s musical base is in classical music. She has studied church music in the Sibelius Academy and lied in Karsruhe’s music university.
“Classical music was my first love”, Tarja gleams.
Turunen has been trained for classical singing. Her rock singing technique she has had to develop herself.
“I’ve travelled a long way to find a lasting way to sing rock-music. No teacher has helped me with it. Maintaining classical delivery has helped me to manage long trips on the road. The most important thing is to stay healthy, since my instrument travels with me all the time.”
Co-operation with symphony orchestras
Tarja Turunen sings constantly as the vocalist for orchestras. In September she will perform in Bulgaria with a symphony orchestra and choir. For the first half time she will interpret opera arias. The second she will spoil her fans with her own compositions. The singer hopes that the same concept would make a whole series of concerts. In Finland Tarja Turunen has performed alongside José Cura and Raimo Sirkiä for example.
Opera dreams
Tarja Turunen doesn’t think too much about the future but focuses on the present.
“I don’t worry about the future. I work a lot now. I have an international career. There are still places I want to visit”.
One wish for the future Turunen does have – She has always wanted to perform in an opera. As her area in improve she sees in particular classical singing. To the commonness of her voice type, lyrical soprano, she laughs: “There’s so many of us!”
And a few little things:

Re: Interviuri cu Tarja
Interviul din Anna, tradus de Afrodite:
- Spoiler:
Text: Jaana Rinne
Translation: Afrodite
Tarja Turunen, 34
Trust took a toll
Tarja Turunen’s balance shook one day in France Lyon. After a successful concert the night before, she opened her e-mail and was shocked.
- Honey, come here, I can’t believe this, I yelled to Marcelo. And then I started to cry, Turunen recalls the shocking day she received an e-mail from one of the world’s most famous writers, Paulo Coelho.
Coelho told in his e-mail that he has listened to Tarja’s music for a while and wants to make lyrics with her. The mail was signed by ”your biggest fan Paulo Coelho”.
- I was stunned that a world famous star has time to write to an Average Jane like me!
The two haven’t met yet, but Paulo has invited Tarja and Marcelo to his home. Tarja, who has been a fan of Coelho’s books for years, is waiting eagerly for the meeting. Paulo Coelho’s books The Alchemist, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept and Life: Selected Quotations inspired Tarja to make lyrics wondering about the meaning of moments for the the band Outlanders. Turunen also composed the song. The powers are now in such a balance that new things are born.
- I’ve gotten excited for example about composing.
Turunen is grateful she is able to choose her associates. The associates from Harus have brought Tarja Turunen and Marcelo Cabuli to Finland from Buenos Aires, where they live nowadays. When the Christmas concert tour is over and the holidays are celebrated, the couple will dip their toes in warm water of Seychelle.
The body / On the road with caravaners
“When I was seven I looked to the field from my room’s window. There was a ghost house on the field. There were old shoes and books there. The upstairs floor in the ghost house was in such bad condition that you couldn’t go there. When it got dark the house got scary and you had to hurry home.
On the field grew “my own” tree. Mum said that one day the girl will come down from there on her head. I didn’t. I sat in the three writing. When I came back home my pockets were full of stories written on little notes.
I was a performer already when I was small. When we had company I did puppet theatre behind the TV. I was three when I showed the content of my wardrobe. I had to change clothes five times a day.
On summer holidays our family travelled as caravaners around Finland. We went trips to concerts and theatre and always sang. We were a really loud family, the cats and dogs home listened to our songs.
I sang as soon as I learned to speak. While playing the keyboard with one finger my mum asked me if I wanted to go to piano lessons. Yes, I whispered. A little later I got a piano. Hellas is still alive and well in Buenos Aires.”
Relationships / Tarja and the boys
“My childhood was full of boys. I had two brothers and in the smallest class of Puhos schools history I was the only girl for six years. The younger girls tormented me because I was a good student. They were more annoyed because I played the piano in a school where the principal was a musician. In small town a family changing their car is reason enough for bullying. Bullying caused stomach problems. I pulled to my shell and my stomach ached. That still happens.
With boys I had to be stronger than I was. I felt comfortable with my brother’s friends who were older than me. I got to talk about things with them. I grew older than my years in that company.
Things changed in Savonlinna’s art high school. The interest from boys felt good after the distressing experiences in primary school. It boosted my self-confidence. The best things were the opera and Olavinlinna castle: the great emotions in music, booming, death and love. I was pretty bohemian already as a teenager, I walked around wearing curtains and sang in front of the mirror.”
Relationships / A shrine to mother
“Mother was an example of how much a person is capable of and how much one can take. I have a lot to learn in that aspect. When mum came home from work she started to clean. When I was a teenager, I wondered how on earth she manages, but during the last couple of years I have noticed I’m starting to resemble her. No matter how tired I am, my house is neat and in order.
Mother was a sparkling personality, sensual femininity was important for her. She never went to a market without lipstick. I go to the store in my natural state and don’t feel a thing!
When I made Karelian pies for the first time home in Buenos Aires I thought about mum. I yelled from joy when I found rye flour at a natural product store. When I wrinkled the pies I looked over to the little shrine I build for mother and said: Look mum, here I am, is the model traditional or my own. Probably my own!
When we’re home a candle burns on mother’s shrine. I found out about mother’s illness when I studied at Kuopio’s Sibelius Academy. When mother came to see me in Kuopio she took off her jacket. She had only one breast. My world stopped and the black well of fear sucked me in. Mother said not to fear. She had had surgery and everything was alright.
Mother fought for five years. Got better and got sick again. For the last month I moved to her house in North-Karelia and took care of her at home. Mother’s death in 2003 was a huge loss but at the same time big lesson: If death comes tomorrow and says it’s my turn, I say bring it on.”
Mind / Support from husband
“I’ve always pursued perfection. If someone asks me am I a perfectionist I said you hit the nail on the head. I still don’t trust myself completely but need other’s support. Support not praise. It works best if you assure me that since I’ve worked so hard everything will most likely work out.
My husband Marcelo is good at supporting. He’s a man who enjoys when a woman shines. It was a strike of luck in the year 2000 when the South-American promoter Marcelo brought Nightwish to the country for a show in Chile.
Marco noticed that the guys of the band always left me alone and started to take care of me. That felt good.
The first three years we lived in a long distance relationship. Oh my, how terrible that was. That crying at the airport really eats you up. Marcelo proposal at the Norma opera in Buenos Aires was the most romantic thing possible.
South-America is the continent of great cultural differences. In Argentina people are almost as quiet as here in Finland, but in Brazil you hear loud talk everywhere. A woman’s position isn’t what we think it is. Mother is head of the house and says the final word in matters relating to the family. Men aren’t wimps but they value women above everything.”
Mind / Return of the bullies
“I got to know Tuomas Holopainen in primary school. His mother was my piano teacher. Nightwish was Tuomas’ dream. I had thought in my wildest dreams how great it would to make a living out of singing, but couldn’t imagine world success at 18. I don’t think anyone of us expected that.
Classical music was always the most important thing in my life but Nightwish brought something different out of me. I still didn’t want to end classical.
The hardest things in my life happened when I was a little under 30. Mother died and Nightwish let me down. Being disappointed in people was worse than getting fired from the band. The disappointment caused a physical shake and shiver for weeks.
The letter brought the bullying in school back to mind. I’ve gotten up from the swamp but the letter left its mark: it’s hard for me to trust people. I’m always making sure that there’s now danger of a misunderstanding.“
The mind / Yin and Yang
“I’ve surely very selfish but right now my and Marcelo’s wellbeing is the most important thing in my life. We’ve had it so good together that I hope it’ll continue. We are each other’s yin and yang. Yin is dark, negative, passive and feminine, yang is bright, positive, active and masculine.
Life has dark moments but the light is in every of us. Six years after Nigthwish my energy flows free. Nowadays there isn’t a different heavy-Tarja and classical-Tarja, but both. I enjoy when I can adventure in the diverse world of music.
The stories of my fans are wild and touching. One anorectic told me she got better after following my career and realizing that a woman’s own magic and personal power is more important than being thin.”
The body / You have to suffer for beauty
“I’ve never had a passion for exercise. In high school I woke up at seven to have time to go jogging before school. After that I haven’t done much exercise. At thirty I woke up to the fact I have to start doing something before my bum gets any wider. Luckily the two hours of sweaty exercise on stage keeps me in pretty good shape.
At this age I hear my mother’s words more often. ‘God has given what He has given and you should be grateful for it’ and ‘you have to suffer for beauty’ were her lines. They come to mind while disentangling my hair or wondering what pleat has appeared on my face again. A wrinkle! Sometimes I’ve cursed my Maradonna legs and laughed that I definetly haven’t gotten them from my mother.
I’m 34 now. The years have gone so fast that I don’t have time for age crises. I’ve been busy following my dreams. I’ve achieved something small and something is surely still coming. The greatest challenge and dream in the future is family. If you don’t make it a problem, a child has room with a couple with an artist. In this family the mother is an artist but luckily the husband is ready to take care of the baby. I’d be a pretty strict mother. I’d draw the lines in pretty much the same places my mother did. ”

"It’s something very special also because I will be filming a DVD, perhaps Milan and my fans will be part of it in one way or another. We’re filming something during the whole tour, so for this rock DVD I don’t know yet when the complete concert will be filmed. But it will be very important for me, because it’s the first one ever so far in my career. "
